Military plays at re-enactments, continues to fuck up Pat Tillman investigation

From the AP: "Investigators intended this image to show the approximate lighting conditions at the time Tillman and the others were shot, because the Rangers who fired testified they were shooting in difficult evening light, with the sun setting behind their targets: Tillman and an allied Afghan fighter. However, Army investigators said the photo was actually taken about 90 minutes before the the time of the actual incident, making the resemblance to actual lighting conditions imprecise."

Kevin Tillman testified today before a House Government Reform and Oversight Commitee hearing regarding the military's misrepresentation of the  death of his brother, NFL football player Pat Tillman, by friendly fire in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.

An aspect of the Army's investigation into the incident apparently included staging a series of "re-enactment" photos, in which Army investigators  attempted to recreate and photograph the circumstances in which Tillman was fired upon by his fellow troops.  This sort of staging is typical of civilian crime scene investigation, except that usually the investigators try to get their re-creations right.

Not the Army though.  In the AP caption for one of the photos, Army investigators say that "the photos were actually taken about 90 minutes before the time of the actual incident, making the resemblance to actual lighting conditions imprecise."

I guess when you're more worried about covering up your mistakes, the little details of accuracy aren't that important.

Video: March 24 Boston Stop the War Rally

5:30

I'm not sure why the Boston protest was scheduled a week after the anniversary of the declaration of war, but here is a sampling of some of the events from the Stop The War Rally that happened yesterday afternoon here in Boston.  Unfortunately, I didn't make it there in time to tape Howard Zinn speaking, and for the sake of brevity I did not include video of some of the other local speakers (also my arms were getting tired and the video was too shaky).  As you'll see in the video, Cindy Sheehan expressed a lot of anger about the supplemental bill that was passed on Friday.  Obviously it's a really tough situation; if anything, we just have to take it as a reminder of how much work is ahead in bringing the Iraq war to an end.

Alive in Baghdad - The Vlog

With the increasing interests in video blogging here on MyDD, I wanted to bring to the attention of the readers a very interesting Vlog - Alive in Baghdad. It is produced by a team of independent Iraqi journalists and an a group of American web/video people who post and run the vlog. The videos give an insight into the daily lives and struggles of Iraqi people, and provide a nice citizen-journalist alternative to most sources of news on Iraq.

A Visit To Renaissance Village

I am a film and media arts student at Emerson College in Boston, and over our spring break this past week I went down with a couple of my classmates to Renaissance Village, the FEMA trailer park located in Baker, Louisiana (near Baton Rouge), to do a documentary video project with some of the teens living in the village.  I wanted to share with the MYDD readers some of the things we found, about the trailer parks and about the status of the recovery efforts in New Orleans.
